Morocco is beautiful but can be overwhelming, even for the most seasoned traveler. Marrakech especially. The streets are chaotic, and the scents and sounds can be overstimulating. But it’s all part of what makes this country unique. And it will leave you wanting more.
After a few days in Marrakech, you might want to experience the quieter side of Morocco. “Hey, Siri – where is Essaouira?”
Located along Morocco’s Atlantic coast, Essaouira is a captivating destination that offers a unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. Known for its kitesurfing conditions, beautiful beaches, laidback atmosphere, picturesque medina, and vibrant arts scene. Essaouira is a gem known to locals and has become a retreat for travelers looking for a more relaxed Moroccan experience.
Let’s dive into what makes Essaouira a must-visit destination. Here’s a guide on how to make the most of your time.
If you’re planning your trip to Morocco, I highly recommend you start with my Morocco packing list for females. This will give you a little more understanding of the culture and acceptable wardrobe.

Getting There:
Essaouira is a 2.5 hrs from Marrakech and cost around 1000 dirhams ($100 USD one way). Alternatively, you can rent a car which would be cheaper, however, we opted to hire a driver as 2 females. It also allowed us to be worry-free and sleep during the drive. The car also came with free wifi in the van.
Essaouira does have an airport but if you’re in Marrakech, it’s just faster to drive.
Where to Stay
You have 2 options when determining where to stay in Essaouira. Stay in the historic medina within walking distance from the main attractions or opt for something on the outskirts of town offering a more tranquil atmosphere and easier beach access.
Where to Stay in Town
Salut Marroc – The most colourful riad with an oceanfront view.
Riad Villa Maroc – One of the oldest most charming riads in the heart of the medina.
Le Palazzo – Located right in town, footsteps from the beach.

Where to Stay out of the Medina
Sofitel Essaouira Mogador Golf & Spa – A resort with oceanfront views, a gold course & multiple pools.

Explore the Medina
Start your morning exploring the Medina. Originally it was an international trading port, which connected Morocco to Europe and the rest of the world.
Unlike Marrakech, you’ll find the medina much quieter and a much more peaceful experience for anyone who gets easily overstimulated. You’ll also find the same things you’d see in the Marrakech Medina (bags, rugs, pottery, argan oil) for cheaper here.

Walk the Skala de la Ville
If you’re a fan of Game of Thrones, you might recognize these 18th-century city walls as Astapor. In reality, these walls protected the medina from the crashing waves of the Atlantic Ocean, and the 19 cannons that line the city walls were used to defend against pirates.

Relax with a Hammam
A hammam is a Middle Eastern type of steam bath. You start with a sauna, followed by laying on a hot stone where someone will wash you, you can then add a massage. It’s a unique experience but I will never say no to a spa experience. You’ll find vendors all around town offering Hammam.

Take a Walk on the Beach
If you’re an adventurous spirit, Essaouira is the spot. Known for its windy coastline, its a popular place for kitesurfers and windsurfers alike. If those aren’t your speed you can book horseback riding or camel riding along the beach.
Stroll Along the Port Side
Take a walk to Essaouira’s port side. You’ll find fishing boats lined up along the port and stalls of fish and fresh-pressed juice stands. It’s a great spot to pick up some snacks, just watch out for the seagulls. From here you’ll get the best view of Essaouira’s city line which looks just like a small Greek island complete with white walls and blue shutters.

Lunch Recommendations
Bonzo – For a quick lunch, try Bonzo. We stumbled on this cafe in search of good coffee and I’m so glad we did. It was the first real espresso I had in over a week. It was so good we came back 2 days in a row for coffee & sandwiches. Don’t skip the crispy chicken sandwich.

Essaouira is famous for its local seafood so there’s no better place to try the fresh catch than at the port. While walking the portside there are many little fish shops you can try.
Try a cooking class – I always say the best way to get to know a culture is through food. Instead of going to lunch one day, why not try a cooking class? I love Moroccan food and love learning how to make a new tagine recipe.
Dinner Recommendations
Ksou – For a cozy authentic Berber experience with delicious Moroccan food head to Ksou. Try traditional dishes like tagine or couscous. End the night with a mint tea as you watch the live music and fire show.

Dar Baba – For a more upscale dinner setting try Dar Baba. Located right in the medina and has a beautiful cocktail bar. While the menu is simple, everything we tasted was delicious.
Overall Essaouira’s blend of history, culture, and relaxation makes it a alluring destination and I’m so glad I added it to my trip. I was curious to see how much it had changed in 6 years and I’m happy to report, it’s just as I remember it.
This 48-hour itinerary will give you the best of what this coastal town has to offer. Essaouira will charm you and leave you excited to return.
