Presets FAQ

Hey guys!

First of all thank you so much for all your endless support and love for what I do. I truly appreciate every email, DM, comment, and piece of feedback you send me and try to respond to everyone but I know that isn’t always possible.

Before you buy, here are my answers to some of my most commonly asked questions:

BEFORE YOU PURCHASE

WHAT IS A PRESET?

If you’re familiar with using filters in apps like Instagram, VSCO, or any other photo editing application, then you’re already familiar with using presets. Presets are Lightroom’s version of filters.

Presets are Lightroom’s way of saving your editing adjustments so you can easily re-apply those same adjustments to multiple photos. Even though both Desktop and Mobile presets are one-click presets you will still need to make minor tweaks. Adjustments can be made to things like exposure, temperature, highlights, saturation, shadows, whites, blacks, and pretty much anything else you want to match your aesthetic and camera settings.

All of these adjustments determine how a photo looks. When you buy my presets you are essentially buying my “look”. If you are still not 100% sure how to make these adjustments make sure you watch my youtube tutorial below.

WHAT IS LIGHTROOM?

Lightroom is a photo editing application made by Adobe. It is the only program I use to edit all of my photos, I don’t use photoshop.

ARE THESE THE EXACT PRESETS YOU USE?

Yes, these are the presets that I created from my travels around the world and the only ones I use on all my photos in my feed. Check out how they look here!

WHAT WILL INFLUENCE THE RESULT OF MY PHOTOS USING PRESETS?

There are so many variables that can influence the final outcome of a photo and why one preset may work better than another. The biggest one being which camera you use. Canon, Nikon, Sony… each camera has slightly different coloring to their photos. Meaning, if I shot the exact same picture with 2 different cameras and applied the same preset to them the end result will still look different.

Other factors that can affect a photo when a preset is applied are lighting, skin tone, camera settings, location, RAW vs JPEG (I’m getting to that, keep reading)

Even though I am sharing the exact presets I use, no preset is perfect. I still tweak every photo depending on what it needs or the look I’m going for. I am also a firm believer that we all see the world slightly different, these presets are how I choose to see the world. If you see life differently I encourage you to make the adjustments needed to make it your own. Just know that you cannot tweak a preset you’ve purchased and call it your own. Creators work very hard at designing these so if you want to start creating and selling your own make sure you start from scratch! 🙂

HELP! MY SKIN TONE LOOKS WEIRD/ APPEARS REALLY ORANGE. WHAT DO I DO?

This is one of the biggest questions I get. Skin tones are one of the trickiest things to work with because everyone is different and has different undertones based on their ethnicity. These presets were designed with my skin in mind, I’m olive skinned so I may naturally be darker than you, hence why the skin tone may look weird.

If this happens, go to your oranges in the color section located on the right-hand side of Lightroom menubar. Here is where you will have to play around with your hue, saturation, and luminance until you find the color that is right for your skin.

Here is a screenshot of the control you will need to play with:

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN RAW AND JPEG IMAGES?

JPEG files are processed right within the camera. Because the image is JPEG, a lot of the image information is compressed and lost. RAW files are uncompressed snapshots of all of the detail available to the camera sensor. Because the images are uncompressed you’re able to produce higher quality images, as well as correct problem images (when editing) that would be unrecoverable if shot in a JPEG format.

CAN I USE THE PRESETS IN THE MOBILE APP?

For optimal results these presets are better used on the desktop however, I will be releasing the mobile version soon. By the way, did you get my FREE mobile preset yet? Yes FREE! I released it to allow you to test out one of my favorite edits and so you can start learning how easy they are to work with! To download it now click here and subscribe. An email will be sent to you shortly!

Getting Lightroom presets into the Lightroom mobile app is a bit of a pain in the butt as it’s not officially supported (again, I will be releasing the mobile version soon) but luckily there are a few ways around it. Here the link to a video that walks you through a sneaks version!

HOW DO I IMPORT A PRESET INTO LIGHTROOM MOBILE?

  1. Open the email attachment and unzip the file from your computer (most phones don’t open unzipped files). So, download the attachment, unzip it and send it to your phone (airdrop or bluetooth work just fine).
  2. Save the photo to your camera roll
  3. Create album & label it whatever you want (Lightroom Mobile, Lisa Homsy presets, presets…)
  4. Add the DNG photo you just saved to your camera roll into the album
  5. Select that same DNG image and click on the 3 dots on the top right-hand corner
  6. Copy settings (make sure the following are deselected) white balance, selective edits, lens correction, spot removal, crop.
  7. Go back to the main page and import the photo you wish to edit and select it
  8. Click on the 3 dots in the top right-hand corner of the image and paste settings
  9. Now the fun begins! Tweak the preset as much as you need in order to achieve your desired look!

**Again, please note that presets aren’t just one click, you will need to make minor tweaks to your image to adjust things like exposure, skin color, temperature…

WHAT HAPPENS IF I DON’T LIKE THE PRESETS?

All sales are final. Since I cannot get the presets back, unfortunately, I cannot issue any refunds. I’ve had some unfortunate experiences in the past where people have purchased my presets, asked to be refunded, and then continued to use the presets or worse sell them. I pour my heart and soul into my work and designing them so please treat them like the work of art they are, my art.
